In Tangkahan you can elephant trek,elephant wash, jungle trek, swim, river, walk, tube swim in warefalls and hot springs, visit caves , visit the butterfly beach nature watch, rest, relax.....
and most of all -enjoy the best Indonesia has to offer.
All organised activites can be arranged at the visitor centre on arrival.
*Please note elephants are engaged in forests patrols on Tuesdays and Fridays and not available to visitors.

I would just like to say that Bambu Lodge/River in Tangkahan is a wonderful place to stay the owner "Black Tiger" is an amazing character. So to any other potential travellers out there, remember Bambu Lodge/River, just ask your guide to take you there.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Bamboo River Lodge. The view from the Restaurant is amazing and the staff are friendly and helpful. Its the true jungle experience with the comforts of clean room, a good bed and western toilet (my room even had a shower :) A great base to go exploring this beautiful area and ride the elephants and bath in the beauty that is Tangkahan

This hotel and nature is overall the best time i have ever had ! I made so many friends and ended up seeing Wak and his daughter like my best friends. they have such a healthy and polite manner to them all.

Getting There
You can reach Tangkhan by bus 2x daily from medan by public bus from terminal Pinang Paris--approx 3 hours. be there early- 7 am !
You can also go by motorbike with driver from Bukit lawang approx 150,000 and 11/2 hrs or by 4x4 from Bukit Lawang this can be organised from Bukitlawang or in reverse. private car hire with driver can be organised from Medan approx500-600, 000 rupiah. The jorney is bumpy for about the last hour from medan and you look like you are disappearing into nowhere- you are - there are also some interesting bridges! Take snacks and drinks but don't overdo it there are no toilet facilities!

Bambu River Guest House has a stunning new restaurant -just about complete with amazing views over the river. The food was the best I've experienced in a guest house. FRIENDLY STAFF. BEST STILL THE GUEST HOUSE- I DISCOVERED PUT BUSINESS ON THE BACK BURNER TO GET RID of illegal loggers between 2001-2002 and supported setting up the eco tourist system in Tangkahan, financially. After a long conversation I discovered that Wak (black tiger) and his English wife, Jane have continued in their support putting nature before their business. A bit of disaster set them back 2 years ago- fire which burned down their restaurant- but they are on the return and need support. Go stay there - excellent beds and clean mosquito free rooms.
